For those who wish to study abroad, the Ministry of Education provides financial aid to Indian students for higher education. To apply for these scholarships, candidates can refer to the official website of the ministry: education.gov.in.
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment offers various scholarship programs such as the National Study Abroad Scholarship Program for Scheduled Castes, Reported Tribes, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic, Landless Agricultural Workers land and traditional artisans, scheduled castes and category of traditional artisans.
Scholarships are awarded to candidates in the above categories to help them pursue higher education, i.e. Masters or Doctorate, by studying abroad with the aim of helping them improve their economic and social status.
To apply, applicants will need to visit the official website, nosmsje.gov.in and then fill in all the required details such as personal details, course and foreign university name, past employment details and various documents as proof. The minimum percentage of points required is 60%. Under the scheme, the following assistance is provided:
- Tuition Fee
- Maintenance allowance (USD 15,400 per year except in the UK. GBP 9,900 per year in the UK)
- Provident allowance (USD 1,500 per year except in the UK. GBP 1,100 per year in the UK)
- Visa fees
- Equipment assignment
- Tuition only and health insurance premium
- Economy class airfare as per plan guidelines
- Incidental Travel Allowance and Equipment Allowance (USD 20 each or INR equivalent)
Ministry of Tribal Affairs
The Department of Tribal Affairs offers scholarship programs such as the National Study Abroad Scholarship Program for Scheduled Tribe Students. Applicants can refer to their official website to apply online: oversea.tribal.gov.in.
It is a central sector program of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and every year 20 new ST students receive scholarships to pursue masters, doctoral and post-doctoral courses abroad.
Ministry of science and technology
The Ministry of Science and Technology offers the Doctoral Scholarship Program for Overseas Visitors. The objective of the program is to build national capacity in frontier science and engineering fields, which are of interest to India, by providing research training to PhD students admitted to Indian institutions in reputable universities/institutions abroad. Its objective is to give Indian research students the opportunity to gain exposure and access to advanced research facilities in academies and laboratories of certain foreign universities.
It would also create links and long-term research and design collaborations with scientists and technologists around the world. And use lessons learned to strengthen national programs.
The program is open only to Indian citizens. The candidate must have registered for a full-time PhD in one of the recognized institutes in India in STEM disciplines. Part-time students or those who have submitted their thesis are not eligible.

Ministry of Minority Affairs
The Ministry of Minority Affairs offers the Padho Pardesh (interest subsidy scheme for students from minority communities). Applicants can check their official website for more details: minoraffairs.gov.in
Under this, the interest subsidy will be granted for the moratorium period (i.e. the course period, plus one year or six months after obtaining employment, whichever comes first) as prescribed in the Indian Banking Association (IBA) lending scheme.
In this case, the ministry will repay an interest component of 100% of the student loan obtained by a student from the bank until the moratorium period.
For this, students must present the documents as per the requirement of the lending bank to avail the student loan. The ministry will refund interest earned on student loans up to the period of the moratorium.
