A local Gujarat court on Saturday ordered that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name be removed from a civil suit for damages for the gruesome murder of four British citizens in the 2002 riots.

  • Four British citizens were killed in a riot in the Sabarkantha district of northern Gujarat during the communal riots of 2002.
  • The local court, in its order, determined that there was no substantive element to link the accused (Narendra Modi) in his personal or official capacity to the incident and qualified the allegations made in the civil suit. of a “vague and general” nature.
  • The Chief of Civil Justice of the Prantij City Court, Suresh Gadhavi, issued the order ordering the removal of the name of Narendra Modi, who was then the Chief Minister of State, as well as former IPS officials K. Chakravarty, Amitabh Pathak and Ashok Narayan, whose names were also mentioned as defendants in the civil lawsuit filed by relatives of the deceased.
  • The civil lawsuit was filed in 2004 by Sameema Dawood, a British citizen, and others, in local court against Modi, then Gordhan Zadaphia Home’s Minister of State and 12 others, claiming Rs 20 million in damages. “for the violence in the state where the relatives of the plaintiffs were allegedly murdered …”
  • During the communal riots of 2002, British citizens Saeed Dawood, Shakeel Dawood and Mohammed Aswat were killed by a mob on National Route 8 on February 28, 2002 while returning from Rajasthan. Three of them died on the spot, while the corpse of the fourth was never found and is presumed dead after seven years.
  • The court approved the order Saturday after a lawyer, S.S. Shah, filed a claim on Modi’s behalf, saying that his name as a defendant was not legally viable in the lawsuit.
  • In 2015, a specially appointed trial court acquitted the six defendants for lack of evidence linking them to the crime. This sensational riot case was one of nine cases investigated by the special investigation team appointed by the Supreme Court and its trial took place in a designated special court under supervision from the Supreme court of India.
