Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has announced a significant hike in tuition fees for the 2025-26 academic session, with increases ranging between 16% and 41% across various courses. A comparative analysis of the latest academic prospectus and the previous year’s fee structure highlights a sharp surge in costs for students.

Fee Hike Across Departments

Among the departments experiencing the highest fee increments, the Department of Persian has recorded a 41.41% rise, with annual tuition fees escalating from Rs 6,700 to Rs 9,475. The Department of Arabic follows closely with a 37.15% increase, raising fees from Rs 7,200 to Rs 9,875 per year. Foreign language programmes, including BA (Hons) in Turkish and other languages, have also seen a similar 37.15% hike.

Social sciences courses at JMI have also been impacted. Fees for MA and BA (Hons) in Political Science, BA (Multidisciplinary), and BCom (Hons) have surged by 32.99%, now costing Rs 9,875 annually, up from Rs 7,425. Science programmes, including BSc (Multidisciplinary), Geography, Mathematics, and Physics, have undergone a 34.29% increase, with annual fees now set at Rs 10,475 compared to Rs 7,800 previously.

Professional courses have also been affected by the fee revision. The BTech programme has seen a 19.04% hike, increasing from Rs 16,150 to Rs 19,225 per year. Similarly, MTech fees have risen by 16.48%, now amounting to Rs 21,375 annually. Law programmes such as LLM (Regular) and BA LLB (Hons) have experienced a 19% rise, pushing fees from Rs 15,000 to Rs 17,850 per year.

Attracting International Students

Interestingly, while JMI has raised tuition fees for domestic students, it has simultaneously reduced fees for students from SAARC countries to attract more international applicants. Additionally, fees for foreign nationals and NRI wards pursuing diploma courses under the University Polytechnic have also been lowered.

Introduction of New Courses

Alongside the fee hike, Jamia Millia Islamia has introduced 14 new courses across undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate levels. Moreover, the university has expanded its admission process through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), increasing the number of CUET-based admissions to 25 programmes this year, compared to 20 last year.

The newly introduced courses include:

  • Undergraduate Programmes: Bachelor of Design (BDes) – 4 years, BSc (Hons) Computer Science (4 years)
  • Diploma and Certificate Programmes: Certificate in Design and Innovation (Self-Financed, Evening), Certificate in Textile Design (Self-Financed, Evening), Certificate in Graphic Art (Print Making) (Self-Financed, Evening), Certificate in Art & Aesthetics (Self-Financed, Evening), Certificate in Creative Photography (Self-Financed, Evening), Certificate in Calligraphy (Self-Financed, Evening), Certificate in Art Appreciation & Art Writing (Self-Financed, Evening)

Implications for Students

The significant tuition fee hike across various programmes at JMI could place additional financial strain on students and their families. However, the university’s effort to attract international students and its expansion of CUET-based admissions demonstrate a commitment to broadening access to quality education while maintaining financial sustainability.

With these changes in place, prospective students must carefully evaluate their options and plan accordingly for the upcoming academic year at Jamia Millia Islamia.
