Union HRD Minister DR Ramesh Pokhriyal released the NIRF Rankings 2020. The Education Minister along with Minister of State Sanjay Dhotre, chairman of AICTE Anil Saharsrabudhe and UGC chairman DP Singh announced the ranking through webcast on his Twitter account.

Since the first rankings, the number of categories has increased from four to nine. In 2019, MHRD also released, for the first time, Atal Ranking of Institutions for Innovation Achievements or ARIIA rankings. However, ARIIA rankings were not announced this year during the online announcement of Higher Education Institute rankings.

This is the first year of including and announcing Dental Institute rankings. Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Delhi has emerged as the best institute. Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Udupi, is at second rank and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune is at third rank.

What is NIRF?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country.

The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.

Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR)

  • Student Strength including Doctoral Students (SS),
  • Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR),
  • Combined metric for Faculty with PhD (or equivalent) and Experience (FQE),
  • Financial Resources and their Utilization (FRU)

Research and Professional Practice (RP)

  • Combined metric for Publications (PU),
  • Combined metric for Quality of Publications (QP),
  • IPR and Patents: Published and Granted (IPR),
  • Footprint of Projects and Professional Practice (FPPP)

Graduation Outcomes (GO)

  • Metric for University Examinations (GUE),
  • Metric for Number of Ph.D. Students Graduated (GPHD)

Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)

  • Percentage of Students from Other States/Countries (Region Diversity RD),
  • Percentage of Women (Women Diversity WD),
  • Economically and Socially Challenged Students (ESCS),
  • Facilities for Physically Challenged Students (PCS),

NIRF 2020 Salient Points

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the list of higher education institutes in the overall category, IISc Bengaluru has bagged the second place in the list while IIT Delhi stood at the third place.
  • Among the colleges, Delhi University’s Miranda House has topped the national ranking of colleges while LSR has bagged second place and Hindu college has come third.
  • The AIIMS New Delhi has been named the foremost medical sciences institute in the country, PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Bangalore comes next 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
  • National Law School of India University, Bengaluru has topped the list for ‘Law’ Discipline. National Law University Delhi has bagged the second rank followed by NLU Hyderabad.
  • Among the pharmacy institutes, Jamia Hmdard has come out as the leader, with IIM Ahmedabad being ranked the top most among management institutes.
  • In Dental colleges, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Scinces has bagged the first position. This is the first time that dental colleges have been ranked under NIRF.
