The number of Indian students pursuing education abroad has surged by an impressive 52.2% over the past five years, according to data shared by the Education Ministry in the Rajya Sabha on December 18. In 2019, the count stood at 5,86,337, which increased to 8,92,989 by 2023.

Top Destinations for Indian Students

Out of the nearly 9 lakh Indian students currently studying overseas, the United States leads the list with 2,34,473 students. It is closely followed by Canada, hosting 2,33,532 students, and the United Kingdom, which accommodates 1,36,921 Indian learners.

A Year of Decline Amid COVID-19

While the overall trend shows consistent growth, the year 2020 marked a significant dip in the number of Indian students studying abroad. The total plummeted by 55.7% to 2,59,655 due to global travel restrictions and the shift to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This temporary setback was swiftly overcome in subsequent years as restrictions eased.

Data and Insights from the Ministry

Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, in response to questions raised by CPI(M) MP V Sivadasan, clarified that the Education Ministry does not maintain direct statistics on Indian students studying abroad. Instead, the data is derived from records of the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Bureau of Immigration, which tracks individuals traveling abroad for education.

Growth Across Major Destinations

The data highlights significant growth in Indian student enrollment across major destinations:

  1. Canada: The number of Indian students in Canada rose by 76% between 2019 and 2023, from 1,32,620 to 2,33,532. This growth occurred despite escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
  2. United States: Indian student enrollment in the U.S. increased by a remarkable 91% during the same period, jumping from 1,22,535 in 2019 to 2,34,473 in 2023.
  3. United Kingdom: The U.K. experienced the most significant rise, with a 273.9% increase in Indian student enrollment. The number soared from 36,612 in 2019 to 1,36,921 in 2023.

This substantial growth can be attributed to several factors, including:

  • Expanded Opportunities: Increasing availability of scholarships and favorable post-study work visa policies.
  • Global Recognition: A rising preference for international degrees that enhance employability and career prospects.
  • Quality Education: Access to world-class educational institutions offering diverse courses.

Conclusion

The growing inclination of Indian students to pursue higher education abroad reflects their aspirations for global exposure and academic excellence. As these trends continue, it’s crucial for policymakers and institutions to adapt to the evolving needs of this dynamic group.

For Indian students planning their study-abroad journey, this data underscores the increasing opportunities and the popularity of global education destinations like the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
