In a significant development for the Indian education sector, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed the Rajya Sabha that three foreign universities are currently operational in India. Furthermore, the University Grants Commission (UGC) is evaluating proposals from over 50 reputed international universities seeking approval to establish campuses across the country.

During the Question Hour in Parliament, Pradhan highlighted the urgent need to curb the growing trend of Indian students going abroad for higher education. Currently, around 14 to 15 lakh Indian students pursue academic courses overseas, resulting in a substantial outflow of financial resources.

To address this issue and boost advanced research opportunities within India, the UGC has recently revised its regulations to simplify the process for foreign universities to set up campuses in the country. This move is aimed at bringing global educational standards closer to Indian students and enhancing the overall quality of higher education.

The Education Minister emphasized that contrary to previously reported figures, three foreign universities are already functional in India. In addition, over 50 other international institutions are in active discussions with various state governments and have submitted applications to the UGC for operational approval.

“These institutions will be assessed thoroughly against Indian academic standards before any clearance is granted,” said Pradhan.

“The objective is to ensure that students have access to world-class education without needing to leave the country.”

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting institutional autonomy, stating that foreign universities will be allowed to function with academic independence while complying with national guidelines.

Addressing a separate query regarding regulatory compliance, the minister reiterated the government’s focus on maintaining high standards in the higher education ecosystem and implementing stricter penalties for universities that fail to adhere to established norms.
