Delhi court acquits Priya Ramani in defamation case against M.J. Akbar; rejects argument that he was a man of “stellar reputation”

A Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed the criminal defamation complaint by former Union Minister Mr J. Akbar against journalist Priya Ramani over her tweets in which she accused him of sexual harassment.

“Women have the right to present their complaints on any platform they choose and even after decades,”

the court said in acquitting Ramani in the case.
  • The court also rejected Akbar’s argument that he was a man of excellent reputation.
  • At the height of the #MeToo movement in 2018, Ramani accused Akbar of sexual harassment. Following Ramani’s indictment, a dozen former Akbar colleagues also brought various charges against him.
  • In response, Akbar filed a criminal defamation complaint against Ramani in October 2018. Akbar claimed that Ramani’s tweet and his article accusing him of sexual harassment were defamatory and damaged his reputation.
  • He also said Ramani had not presented any evidence to prove his story. However, Ramani has asserted the truth as his defense regarding the allegations of sexual harassment against Akbar.
  • He argued that the criminal case was launched to create a deterrent effect against women who reported their experience of sexual harassment by them.
  • Following the verdict, Ramani said she felt justified on behalf of all the women who have spoken out against sex harassment at work.

“This case was not about me, but what women face in the workplace. It’s amazing to have your truth validated in court. My victory belongs to everyone who spoke up during the #MeToo movement. “

Ramani said

Farmers call for a roko rail demonstration from noon to 4 p.m. tomorrow

Protestant agricultural unions have called for a nationwide roko rail demonstration on Thursday, between noon and 4 p.m., which they hope will force the government to break down the deadlock on three agricultural laws.

  • However, the response to a similar roadside protest earlier this month suggests that the massive impact of these blockades may be limited to a few states.
  • The railways also targeted the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal by deploying 20,000 additional security personnel ahead of the protest.
  • The call for the protest was made by Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a group that brings together most of the unions involved in the unrest.

Govt. denies connection between Char Dham project and Uttarakhand disaster

On Wednesday, the government denied in the Supreme Court any connection between the Char Dham Expressway expansion project in Uttarakhand and the recent flash flooding in the Rishi Ganga valley, which claimed many lives and damaged the project “Tapovan hydropower plant”.

  • The refusal, in a court headed by Judge Rohinton Nariman, came from the government in response to a communication from the Chairman of the High Powers Committee (HPC), Ravi Chopra, linking the tragedy to the Char Dham project.
  • The court asked the government to submit a response within two weeks.
  • The Char Dham 899 km road project connects the four shrines of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Garhwal Himalayas.
  • The project is being scanned at the Supreme Court after an NGO, Citizens for Green Doon, raised environmental concerns about logging and the damage caused to the fragile ecology of the Himalayas by the widening of roads in existing mountain.
  • The high-level committee was formed to be the eyes and ears of the Supreme Court on the project. However, they were not unanimous in their views.
  • In January, the government supported a majority opinion in the committee in favor of the need to widen access roads from the Himalayas to the Indochinese border to facilitate the movement of troops.
  • The Defense Ministry, in an affidavit to the court, said it was unfortunate that three of the HPC members issued a dissenting opinion to reconsider a December 15, 2020 circular from the Ministry of Roads and Transport and Highways, which fixed the width of the roadway of the access roads at seven meters with a paved shoulder of 1.5 meters on each side.

Amazon used a covert strategy to bypass Indian regulators, according to a Reuters report

Amazon has favored large sellers on its Indian platform and used them to circumvent rules intended to protect small retailers in the country from the onslaught of e-commerce giants, according to internal documents seen by Reuters.

  • Indian merchants, both physical and small online sellers, have long alleged that Amazon’s platform greatly benefits a small number of large sellers and that the American giant is charging predatory prices that have crushed legions of retailers.
  • Amazon rejects it: says it complies with Indian law, which states that an e-commerce platform can only connect sellers with buyers for a fee, unlike the United States, where Amazon can act as a middleman and sell products directly to consumers.
  • The company also claims to operate a transparent online marketplace and treat all sellers equally. Internal Amazon documents contradict these claims, revealing how the e-commerce giant has helped a small number of sellers prosper, giving them reduced fees and helping secure special deals with big tech makers like Apple Inc.
  • The documents also show that the company has exercised. Significant control over the inventory of some of the biggest sellers on Amazon.in, despite the fact that it publicly states that all sellers operate independently on its platform.
  • The documents reviewed by Reuters were dated from 2012 to 2019. They included draft meeting notes, PowerPoint slides, progress reports and emails. One of the notes contains a candid assessment of Modi’s “simple” thinking style, calling him “not an intellectual.”
