Hurriyat President Syed Ali Shah Geelani decided to leave the Hurriyat All-Party Conference, the conglomerate of separatist parties in Kashmir. He said that all constituents of his Hurriyat faction had been informed of the decision in a detailed letter.

On house arrest since 2013 at his Srinagar residence, Geelani, who is 90 years old, was previously associated with Jamaat-e-Islami, but was floated by his own political organization, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. It also separated from the Mirwaiz Umar Farooq faction of the Hurriyat due to differences in the approach to be taken to resolve the Kashmir problem. Considered intransigent, Geelani called for J&K’s accession to Pakistan.

  • The Supreme Court asked the Union government on Monday to clarify the status of the visa of 3,500 foreign citizens from 35 countries who were blacklisted for the Tablighi Jamaat demonstration.
  • He asked the Center to clarify whether it was a general directive or whether care had been taken to listen to and judge the merits of each case individually.
  • The court ordered the government to respond on July 2, the next hearing date. Four brief petitions, including one filed by a Thai citizen who was seven months pregnant, questioned the Center’s decision of April 2, which blacklisted 960 foreigners, and another subsequent decision on June 4, in which more than 2,500 foreigners have been blacklisted for 10 years since they traveled to India.
  • To relieve thousands of candidates for public accounting (CA), the Supreme Court has declared that students can choose not to take their July exams without running the risk of being marked as having failed in the documents they have lost due to the pandemic.
  • Although it allowed the Institute of Public Accountants of India (ICAI) to conduct exams in July-August, a bench headed by judge AM Khanwilkar said that students should be given the opportunity to change their centers “to the end”. The choice of test centers by students should not be frozen but left open, the court said.
  • Armed men attacked the Pakistan Stock Exchange building in Karachi, killing two guards and a police officer, and injuring seven others, before security forces killed the four attackers, police said.
  • Separatist insurgents from Balochistan province, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), claimed responsibility for an article on Twitter. However, Reuters and other news agencies were unable to verify the authenticity of the claim.
  • The number of coronavirus cases in the country was 5.67,089 with a death toll of 16,895. India reported on Monday 19,459 new coronavirus cases and 380 deaths, which is by far the highest count on a single day to date.
  • Meanwhile, Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal said his government would launch a plasma bank in the nation’s capital to help critically ill patients with coronavirus.
  • And in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched the Platina project, a plasma therapy trial for the treatment of critically ill Covid-19 patients. A state official described it as the largest initiative of its kind in the world.
  • The third round of meetings between Indian and Chinese corps commanders is scheduled for Tuesday amid persistent tensions along the Ladakh border and little progress in reducing escalation. Talks will take place at 10:30 am in Chushul, on the Indian side, a government source said on Monday. The previous talks took place on the Chinese side in Moldo off Chushul.
  • The first batch of four Rafale fighter jets is expected to arrive in India in the last week of July. The four planes are scheduled to leave France on July 27 and travel to India with a stopover at Al Dhafra Air Force Base in the United Arab Emirates.
  • Amid with increased tensions along the current line of control (LAC) with China, the Center on Monday decided to ban 59 Chinese requests, including Tik Tok.
