India passed peak of COVID-19, Ministry of Science panel said

India passed peak of COVID-19 in September and if current trends continue there will be “minimal cases” in February. These are the findings of a modeling study conducted by a seven-member expert group on the future course of the pandemic, which was commissioned by the Department of Science and Technology.

  • The COVID burden in India is expected to be capped at 106 lakh of symptomatic infections early next year, with fewer than 50,000 active cases in December, according to the study.
  • There are 74 lakh of confirmed cases on Sunday, of which around 7.80,000 are active infections.
  • However, this is based on the fact that there are no spikes caused by festivals or mutations in the virus that help its spread in winter.

‘Second wave possible in winter’

  • Meanwhile, Niti Aayog member VK Paul, who also heads a panel of experts coordinating efforts to tackle the pandemic in the country, in an interview with PTI said that while cases and deaths have declined in most states, he cannot rule out. the possibility of a second wave of infections in winter.

“In India, new cases of coronavirus and the number of deaths have declined over the past three weeks and the pandemic has stabilized in most states.

said Dr Paul.

“However, there are five states (Kerala, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal) and 3-4 Union Territories (UT) where there is still an upward trend,”

said Dr Paul.
  • India is in a somewhat better position now, he said, but the country still has a long way to go as 90% of people are still susceptible to coronavirus infections.

  • Kerala’s COVID-19 tally topped 3.3 lakh, while the figure rose to 1,139 on Saturday. Prior to Onam (August 22), the state had reported around 54,000 cases, while the death toll was nearly 200.
