The first phase of the 2021 census and the NPR update may be delayed by a year

The first phase of the census and the National Population Register (NPR) update exercise, scheduled for this year but postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, could be delayed a year as there are no signs that the pandemic is slowing down.

  • The Indian census is one of the largest administrative and statistical exercises in the world, with the participation of more than 30 Lakh officials who would visit every home across the country.

“The census is not an essential exercise at this time. Even if it’s a year late, it wouldn’t hurt, ”

a senior official told the Press Trust of India.
  • The official said a final decision has not been made on the date of the first phase of the 2021 census and the NPR update, but it will almost certainly not take place in 2020 due to the increase in coronavirus cases.
  • The home registration phase of the census and the NPR update exercise were scheduled to take place across the country from April 1 to September 30, 2020, but were postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Since the entire exercise requires the participation of several thousand officials and visits from each family, we cannot reduce the associated health risk,”

the official said.

BJP secretary general suggests the government should be flexible with RCEP

  • Referring to the Indo-Pacific region as the “center of geopolitics” in the future, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav suggested that the government could show some flexibility on the issue of membership of the 15- Free Trade Agreement of the Regional Integral Economic Association (RCEP).
  • The RCEP grouping’s ministerial meetings last week also announced that they would leave the way “open for India” to join the deal, if India reconsiders its position before the deal is signed in November.
  • “Should the decision [to exit] RCEP be made as a final decision, or should we always keep a window open?” Madhav asked, during a webinar hosted by the New Delhi-based Indo-American Friendship Association (IAFA) last week about India’s foreign policy under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. “India must play its cards carefully and with much more attention in the Indo-Pacific region,” he added.
  • In November 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at a meeting in Bangkok that India would abandon RCEP negotiations with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and its partners China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, mainly due to their fears of seeing their markets invaded by Chinese products.
  • Since then, despite several attempts by RCEP countries to invite Indian negotiators to trade talks, the Ministry of Commerce has reiterated the government’s refusal.

More than 14 Lakh people have been affected due to flooding in five river systems in Odisha, the state government said on Sunday.

said Pradeep Jena, director general of the national disaster management authority.
  • Seventeen people lost their lives by collapsing walls and sliding down swollen rivers.
  • According to the Office of the Special Relief Commissioner, 2.65 lakh people were stranded in large pools of water in 340 villages and 57,824 people received cooked meals after being evacuated from flooded houses.
  • A preliminary assessment indicates that 10,382 houses and 1.68 lakhs per hectare of cultivated land were affected by the floods.

The current banking challenge is the most intractable even before COVID-19: Urjit Patel

  • In his first interaction with a reporter after leaving the Reserve Bank of India, former Governor Urjit Patel spoke about his new book, Overdraft; Saving the Indian Saver, in a conversation invited by the Pune International Center .

“In banking in India, which I have observed from different distances over the past 30 years, it is the other way around. Our macroeconomic problems have periodically created crises in the financial sector. The current banking challenge is the most intractable even before COVID. We tend to prematurely declare our victory over any challenge we wish to solve. We tire very quickly, ”

Patel said in a long and insightful interview.

The number of coronavirus cases reported in India is 3,612,916 at the time of publication of this bulletin with a death toll of 64,604. A record one-day spike of 78,761 infections has taken India’s COVID-19 count to more than 35 lakh, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health updated at 8 a.m.
