“Our scriptures say there has been no ruler like Lord Ram. Lord Ram’s policy was that motherland is bigger than heaven. It is also Lord Ram’s policy that as a nation gets powerful, it becomes better at living peacefully. We have to ensure that fraternity and friendship cements the bricks of this temple. We have to respect the sentiments of everyone,”

Modi said.

“India’s faith, the collective of the people, and the strength of this collective, has been a subject of research by many across the world…Ram is the thread of India’s unity in diversity,”

Modi said, commenting on the different traditions and names of Ram and Ramayan in different languages such as like Tamil, Telugu, Odiya, Bengali, Kashmiri, and Malayalam.

Many of you probably already know this story, as videos of the tragic incident have gone viral on social media. On Tuesday, a massive explosion occurred in port warehouses near downtown Beirut, killing 100 people and injuring nearly 4,000. The explosion sent shock waves through the windows, shattering the masonry and shaking ground the floor across the Lebanese capital.

  • The explosion was linked to the storage of massive amounts of highly explosive materials in warehouses. Authorities said they expected the death toll to rise as rescuers dug through rubble to save people and remove the dead.
  • While Lebanon’s volatile capital is no stranger to violent explosions, the city, which is already recovering from an economic crisis and an increase in coronavirus infections, has never experienced one of this magnitude.
  • The Lebanese government declared a two-week state of emergency, effectively giving the army full powers in the capital. It also approved $ 13 million to deal with the crisis.
  • The Lebanese interior minister said initial reports indicated that explosive materials, seized years ago and stored in the port, had exploded.
  • Israel, which has waged several wars with Lebanon, has denied any role and offered to help.

While much of the media attention has focused on the Temple Ram ceremony, today is also the first anniversary of the Modi government’s decision to repeal the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under article 370. Today Strict security has been maintained throughout the Kashmir valley to thwart the protest marches of the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on Article 370, China reiterated its opposition to the measure today, saying “any unilateral change to the status quo” in Jammu and Kashmir is “illegal and invalid”. The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement on Wednesday, in response to a question about the anniversary, reiterated Beijing’s opposition to the move, which it similarly expressed in various statements last year.

  • “China is closely monitoring the situation in the Kashmir region,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said. “Our position is consistent and clear.
  • This issue is a long-standing dispute between Pakistan and India. This is an objective fact established by the Charter of the United Nations, the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the bilateral agreements between Pakistan and India.
  • Any unilateral change in the status quo is illegal and invalid.
  • “Last year, Beijing particularly expressed its opposition to the creation of a trade union territory in Ladakh, which included within its boundaries the Aksai Chin region, now occupied by China, although India had pointed out to China that the change had in no way altered India’s external borders or its territorial claims.

Prominent civil rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan today reported to the Supreme Court that his tweets in June of a photo showing Chief Justice Sharad A. Bobde riding a bicycle and the court’s role during the last six years amounted to “criticism” and not contempt.

  • “It’s a criticism … why don’t you take it objectively?” Senior lawyer Dushyant Dave, representing Bhushan, requested a three-judge bench led by Judge Arun Mishra.
  • Noting that hundreds of people had tweeted the photo of Chief Justice Bobde on the bike, Dave asked, “There are so many funny tweets from others … Will the court call them all?”

The number of coronavirus cases reported in India was 19,51,813 at the time of this news summary, with a death toll of 40,643. India recorded 52,509 new cases on Wednesday.
