Republic TV scanned as Mumbai police breaks fake TRP racket

  • Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said on Thursday he broke a Television Rating Point (TRP) racket involving Republic TV, Box Cinema and Fakt Marathi.
  • Singh, while speaking to reporters in Mumbai, said all three channels manipulated TRPs and distorted the system used by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to rate TV channels. The TRP is calculated on the basis of the audience of the television channel in a set of households.

“There are 2,000 barometers installed in Mumbai to monitor TRP. BARC has entered into a confidential contract to monitor these barometers, ”

Singh said.

He explained that the defendants would ask certain households to keep certain chains even if they were not at home and bribe certain people to simply manage their chains.

“During the preliminary investigation, one person was arrested and revealed that he worked for a company called Hansa Research Group Private Limited, which is part of BARC. The defendant said the company misused confidential data entrusted to it. It appears to have been done to gain illicit profits from various TV stations, resulting in illegal loss for various advertisers and their agencies, ”

Singh said.

“The former employee of Hansa and his partner were arrested and Rs 20 lakh with Rs 8.5 lakh were found in the bank locker. About ₹ 400-500 were delivered to various households each month. They were brought to court and the police are in custody until October 9, ”

he said.
  • Officials from Republic TV, which claims to have the highest TRPs among news outlets, will soon be summoned, Singh said, in a move that is important as Mumbai police have been in conflict with some channels over the broadcast cover of the Sushant Singh Rajput case.

“The biggest name that has come up is Republic TV. The directors and promoters of Republic TV are under investigation for rating fraud, ”

Singh said.
  • The owners of Fakt Marathi and Box Cinema were also arrested and charged under Articles 420 (deception and dishonest delivery of goods) and 409 (criminal breach of trust by an official, or by a banker, merchant or agent) of the IPC.
  • Arnab Goswami of Republic TV released a statement on social media which rea: “Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has made false charges against Republic TV because we interviewed him in the investigation into the Sushant Singh Rajput case. Republic TV will present a criminal libel case against Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh. “

Supreme Court criticizes Center’s affidavit to Tablighi Jamaat

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad A. Bobde on Thursday arrested Union government for mistreating Supreme Court by making “official junior “submit an” elusive “affidavit containing” unnecessary and absurd “allegations on petitions challenging discriminatory and community coverage of the Tablighi Jamaat incident by some sections of the media.

“You can’t treat the court like you do in this case … A junior officer submitted his affidavit. We found it extremely elusive and obviously short of detail. He even says that the petitioners here are not reporting any cases of misinformation… ”

Chief Justice Bobde spoke to Attorney General Tushar Mehta.

“We want the secretary of the [Information and Broadcasting] department to present this affidavit … The secretary has to say what he thinks about the incidents. We do not want unnecessary and senseless aversions like the ones that are happening now, ”

  • The government’s affidavit said that a “general gag order” on the media on this matter would violate a journalist’s right to freedom of expression and an informed citizen’s right to know.
  • The hearing began with Chief Justice Bobde asking whether the regulatory provisions of the Cable Television Act, which are intended for cable networks, would be “applicable” in television programming.
  • “We want to know whether the government has the power to question or ban television broadcast signals,” he asked the parties.
  • Lead counsel, Dushyant Dave, who appeared on behalf of the petitioners in the case, argued that the Department of Information and Broadcasting did have the power to prohibit the transmission of cable television under the Television Act.
  • He spoke about how the Malayalam channel Asianet was banned for several hours in March by law due to its coverage of the Delhi riots.
  • The court said it would hear arguments on this point and adjourned the case for two weeks. The petitions said that some sections of the print and electronic media were spreading sectarianism and community hatred in connection with the Tablighi Jamaat conference held in the Nizamuddin Markaz region, and called on the ministry to identify and take strict action against the sections of the media that had reported the problem
