Iconic Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg Death

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a tiny but prominent women’s rights advocate who became the Court’s second judge, died Friday at her home in Washington. She was 87 years old.

  • Ginsberg’s death just over six weeks before Election Day is likely to spark a heated battle over whether President Donald Trump should nominate and the Republican-led Senate should confirm her replacement or whether the seat should remain vacant until April.
  • The result of his career against Democrat Joe Biden is known. Ginsburg spent his last years on the bench as the clear leader of the liberal wing of the court and has become something of a rock star to his fans.
  • The young women especially seemed to embrace the court’s Jewish grandmother, affectionately calling her the notorious RBGs, for her advocacy for women’s and minority rights.
  • She resisted Liberal calls to step down during Barack Obama’s presidency at a time when Democrats were in the Senate and a like-minded replacement could have been confirmed.
  • Instead, Trump will almost certainly try to pressure Ginsburg’s successor through the Republican-controlled Senate and shift the Conservative court even further to the right.
  • In addition to civil rights, Ginsburg has taken an interest in the death penalty and has voted repeatedly to limit its use. During his tenure, the court declared unconstitutional for states to execute the intellectually disabled and murderers under the age of 18.
  • Ginsburg is the author of powerful dissenters in cases of abortion, the franchise, and wage discrimination against women. She said some were aimed at influencing the views of his fellow judges, while others were “another day’s call for information” in the hope that they would serve as a guide for future courts.
