Serum Institute stops clinical trial of Covid-19 vaccine

Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune has suspended clinical trial of candidate vaccine Covid-19 under development by Jenner Institute of University of Oxford and Astra Zeneca, following an opinion from the Comptroller General of Medicines of India (DCGI) on Wednesday.

  • Trials of the vaccine have been halted around the world after one of the recipients in the UK exhibited unwanted symptoms.
  • In a statement released Thursday, the SII said, “We are reviewing the situation and halting the trials in India until AstraZeneca restarts the trials. We are following DCGI’s instructions and will not be able to comment further on the tests. “
  • While trials of the vaccine have been halted in four countries as a precaution, DCGI, in its notification to IBS, asked why it was progressing with trials and why it had not submitted a detailed report on the UK patient.
  • The SII argued that it was following DCGI’s instructions and had not been ordered to stop the trials. However, earlier the SII issued a statement saying that nothing negative had been reported during the trials and therefore they would prosecute them.

“We cannot comment on the UK test reports other than the fact that they have been shut down for further examination and hope to restart soon. As for the trials in India, they are continuing and we have not encountered any problems, ”

he reads in his statement.
  • Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca had said that a volunteer in its trials suffered from an “unexplained illness” and that such breaks in drug trials were “routine”.

  • The case highlighted relevant legal issues, including whether a person expressing a genuine opinion on judicial corruption is required to prove it or “whether it is sufficient to show that he held that opinion in good faith”.
  • The case also concerns whether the suo motu powers of the Supreme Court to initiate contempt under section 129 and to restrict freedom of expression are restricted by the 1971 law.
  • By the way, even in the other contempt case in which Bhushan was convicted and refused to apologize, Venugopal had attempted to intervene with his opinions, only to be interrupted by the Bench.
