Karnataka orders district magistrates to investigate Bengaluru riots: At least 110 protesters have been arrested for violence that erupted in DJ Halli neighborhood in eastern Bengaluru following protests against a social media post by MLA Congress parent R. Akhanda Srinivasamurthy on Tuesday evening.

  • The Karnataka government ordered an investigation by the district judge Naveen P, Srinivasamurthy’s nephew, was arrested for allegedly sharing an inflammatory post on Facebook.
  • Nearly 60 police officers and at least one media person were injured in the riots.
  • Police have now imposed a curfew in areas affected by the unrest. Tension reigned Tuesday night after the post went viral. Soon people started to gather in front of the MLA’s house to protest the publication.
  • While the MLA was not at home, the mob threw stones at their house and then set parts of it on fire.
  • Police rushed to the scene and picked up Naveen even as a crowd of around 1,000 demanded he hand them over, police officials said.
  • The mob accused the police of “saving” Naveen and quickly turned on them.
  • The violence quickly spread to other parts of the region. Meanwhile, Karnataka’s Minister CT Ravi said the state would recover the costs of assets destroyed by violence from people who rioted.

Kamala Harris becomes the first black and Indian woman to run for president: U.S. Senator from California Kamala Harris has been named vice-chair to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

  • Harris, 55, is the first woman of Indian and black descent to be on the presidential list of a major political party in the U.S.
  • The move puts her in a powerful position to lead the Democratic Party in the near future and with a chance for the presidency in four to eight years.
  • The daughter of Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer researcher from Chennai, and Donald Harris, an economics professor from Jamaica, Harris has decades of public service under her belt.
  • In 2010, she became Attorney General of California, the first black woman to hold the post. In 2016, she was elected to the Senate.
  • In a country gripped by a race and police debate, not only Harris’s African-American origins, but also his former role as a prosecutor, are expected to be exposed.
  • As a presidential candidate, she presented her plans for criminal justice reform, including legalizing marijuana, abolishing the death penalty and banning private prisons.
  • However, his record as California attorney general has been criticized, particularly by the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, for his “tough on crime” policy.
  • Last year Harris was one of the main co-sponsors of legislation (which ultimately did not pass), the impact of which would be to increase the number of green cards that can be awarded to countries like the India and China, which normally maximize their annual resident visa quotas.
  • About her ethnicity, Harris said she hasn’t spent a lot of time trying to categorize herself. “Maybe I should understand, but I agree,” she said in an interview with the Washington Post.

The number of reported coronavirus cases in India was 23,84,760 at the time of this news summary, with a death toll of 47,407. The Health Ministry said today India’s cure rate has passed 70%, with 16,39599 people having recovered from the disease so far, while active cases were just 27, 64%. of all cases.

  • The death rate was further reduced to 1.98%. Experts have pointed out that the focus on the recovery rate could be misleading.
  • Since the majority of patients recover from the disease and the death rate is low, it necessarily follows that cure rates in all countries will eventually be in the 1990s.
  • Meanwhile, the Minister State of the Union for AYUSH Shripad Y Naik has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
  • Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s state of health remains critical, the Army Research and Reference Hospital (R&R) said on Wednesday.

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has selected three firms — Larsen and Toubro Limited, Shapoorji Pallonji and Co. Ltd. and Tata Projects Ltd. — from the seven that applied for pre-qualification to bid for the project to construct the new Parliament building. The project is a part of the government’s proposed redevelopment of the Central Vista. It is estimated to cost Rs. 889 crore and take 21 months to complete, according to the CPWD.

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer leading the Bhima Koregaon (Maharashtra) investigation and a Delhi Police officer heading the team probing the riots last February in north-east Delhi are among the 121 recipients of the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation that was announced today.

“This medal was constituted in 2018 with the objective to promote high professional standards of investigation of crime and to recognize such excellence in investigation by investigating officers,”

the Home Ministry said.
