The CBI obtained custody, until July 16, of the five Sattankulam police officers involved in the deaths of the merchants P. Jayaraj and J. Benicks. The five defendants were brought before the Madurai chief judicial magistrate on Tuesday. Chief Judge T.V. Hemanandakumar awarded CBI custody of then Inspector Sattankulam, Sridhar, Deputy Inspectors Balakrishnan and Raghu Ganesh, Chief of Police Murugan and Officer Muthuraj. The CBI plans to bring the accused to court on July 16.

On Tuesday, the Indian and Chinese military commanders began a crucial round of negotiations to end a limited-time disconnection process for hot spots like Pangong Tso and Depsang. The talks will also cover arrangements to withdraw large numbers of troops and weapons from rear bases along the effective control line (FTA) in eastern Ladakh, government sources said.
