US President Donald Trump has once again offered to play the role of statesman and global peacemaker, this time declaring himself “ready, willing and able” to “arbitrate or arbitrate” the “furious border dispute” between India and China, in the midst of the persistent deadlock between the soldiers of the two neighbors of the royal line of control (ALC).
Trump has also repeatedly offered in the past to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, New Delhi had rejected it every time.
Last year, Trump’s first offer to mediate was in fact quickly followed by the removal of the special status enjoyed by Jammu and Kashmir under Section 370, widely regarded as an initiative of India to strengthen their position before such intervention can take place.
“We have informed India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to negotiate or arbitrate their border dispute. Thank you”
Trump said in a morning tweet.
At the same time, the Chinese government said today that the border situation with India is “broadly stable and controllable” and that the two countries have appropriate communication mechanisms and channels to resolve problems through dialogue and consultation.
“We are following the important consensus reached by the two leaders and are strictly observing the agreements between the two countries,”
said a Chinese spokesperson.
Speech by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, apparently referring to the instructions of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their two informal summits, when they called on the armed forces of the two countries to take further confidence-building measures to maintain the peace along the border.
